Why do you need an EMIS?

An Energy Management Information System, or EMIS, is the layer most factories have never had: permanent wireless sensors on the equipment, every reading arriving in one place, and a picture of the facility that is current rather than weeks or months old. An energy management system is the programme a factory runs; an EMIS is the measured data underneath it.

If you want to manage something, you need to measure it. Reading the facility minute by minute instead of once a month on a bill shows you equipment running when it should not be, schedules that fight each other, set-points that have drifted and leaks nobody has heard.

Natural Resources Canada sets the bar at 5%: an effective EMIS should cut energy costs by at least that much. Its own EMIS handbook puts the range at 5–15% of annual energy costs when the system is properly implemented.

What the visibility buys you.

  1. Communication

    When the maintenance lead, the operations manager and the person who signs the utility cheque are all looking at the same screen, the meeting stops being about whose number is right and starts being about what to do next.

  2. KPIs that are actually measured

    Cost per unit, energy per tonne, runtime, downtime and product temperature, recorded continuously rather than reconstructed at month end from a bill and a good memory. If your customers or your board are asking about ISO 50001, this is the measured data the standard runs on.

  3. Competitiveness

    Two factories make the same part. The one that knows what an hour of production costs, and which shift is cheaper, is the one that prices the job right. The same numbers answer the sustainability questionnaire your customers send: Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG reporting, an ISO 14064 greenhouse gas inventory and ISO 14001 environmental management all run on measured energy data, and most factories are still estimating it.

Most Canadian factories are still analog.

There is remarkable equipment in Canadian manufacturing, and almost none of it is talking to anybody.

Where there are controls at all, they are often a SCADA system somebody commissioned twenty or thirty years ago: one screen, in one room, doing exactly the job it was built for. Everything outside that room is a monthly bill and a clipboard.

Real-time data changes what you can ask. What did that line cost to run last Tuesday? Is the compressor working harder than it was in March? Why was the water bill up nine per cent? A meter answers all three inside a week.

An analog factory has nothing to feed an AI.

Everybody is being told to do something with AI right now, and that part is genuinely exciting. What tends not to get said is that AI runs on your data. That is the food it needs, and an analog factory cannot feed it.

Digital transformation is not a purchase you make one afternoon. Analytics and AI both need the same thing first, which is data your factory does not currently produce. Data logging takes time to accumulate, so everything useful that comes afterwards is built on a few years of honest, minute-by-minute history.

So start collecting your baseline now, whether the model you eventually point at it is our own agent TYF or one your team builds. A factory that begins recording this year has something worth asking questions of in three.

The data has to exist before anything clever can be done with it.

    Then we design the sensor network around your lines and your shifts: what to measure, where it goes, and what it talks to.

    Procure and install

    We source the hardware, configure and bench-test it before it ships, and install it ourselves. Most sensors go in without impacting production.

  4. 04

    Configure and commission

    We build the dashboards, alerts and reports around your factory and your team, then commission them with the people who are going to use them rather than simply handing over a login.

  5. 05

    Ongoing support and monthly reviews

    Every month we go through what the meters found with your team. Your data ages like a fine wine, getting richer and more valuable the longer it runs.
